− | Last week was the beginning of The Hatchling Chronicle - starting with the hatching of Cormie and her siblings. Cormie realizes she is different than any dragon- she is covered with soft curly auburn hair all over her body, and her tiny wings. This difference may have deadly consequences.

− | Cormie soon learned the meaning of Othelh’s words “You will not get extra” Each day the meat was brought to feed her siblings, and her mother – the smaller chucks just the right size and tenderness for the small hatchlings, her mothers portion being larger pieces of older game- far too stringy for her to share with her mother. Each of her brothers and sisters would eat as much, and as fast as they could until they were stuffed. Sometimes two or three of them would bite the same piece of meat at the same time and a squabble would begin over who would be able to eat it. Cormie used those times, and when her siblings were so involved in eating to sneak in and grab a few scraps before ducking away to nibble on them. While the scraps didn’t fill her completely, and she didn’t fall asleep right away like her brothers and sisters did- the scraps gave her the strength to get through another day, and as she chewed her meat scraps, she thought. She knew she would have to find a way to get more food for herself-She didn’t want to take any food from her mother as she needed all her energy to take care of the others. Once the food had been eaten, as all dragons do, all in the nest fell asleep.

− | Cormie waited for these time and would pretend to be asleep until her mother dozed off as well before slipping out of the nest and making her way to the entrance of the cave. Sometimes she would find fallen scraps of meat and snap them up. If another dragon came by, she hid in the shadows- remembering all too well what Othelh had done the day Cormie was hatched. On one of her wandering journey’s to explore the caves Cormie heard soft /eep /eep /eep coming from the crack in the rocks behind her. Careful to stay out of sight of the other dragons, Cormie peaked inside and saw a large rat was fighting another one over a scrap of meat it had dragged in.

− | Snick Snick! Went Cormie’s tongue as it wrapped about the rats and pulled them into her mouth. Licking her lips Cormie looked in the hole again. There were no more rats there- but she knew that there would be another day. When her mother woke, she found Cormie curled up beside her fast asleep, a smile upon her little face.
