In almost every race and culture there are myths and legends concerning dragons. As the peoples of the world move into the digital age, so too does their culture. In the online metaverse of Second Life, where imagination rules above all else, the fabled dragons of legend truly live and breathe.
We are fortunate to be alive in these exciting times, where Astral dragons foretell the alignment of the stars and great Fire Drakes breathe searing flame across the land.

The Dragons
Fabled explorer Daryth Kennedy has travelled the mountains, swamps, plains and islands of Second Life cataloguing many new species, breeds and types of dragon, which, though rooted firmly in the historical imagery and lore of the ancient and modern world, represent a new evolution of these mystical creatures. Collated here for the first time in one location are her journal entries and wisdom on these new breeds:
Daryth's journals are faded and worn and peeling at the edges, with some pages missing entirely. Sometimes all that can be deciphered is a scant sentence or single word.
Anubis Dragon
First Sighting: August 2006
Native Color: Black body, black feathered wings and gold claws
Breath: A blast of sand and black scarabs
The Anubis dragon is both feline and yet jackal-like in appearance, with a sleek black body and striking dusty black-feathered wings. Its sharp claws and ornate choker are adorned with gold.
- The Anubis has a saddle that seats two and which has flight and ground modes
Aquatic Dragon
First Sighting: April 2005
Native Color: Aquatic scales and wings with White spines and Gold claws
Breath: A jet of water and bubbles
Making its home in lakes and seas, the Aquatic dragon is a streamlined swimmer. Instead of spines, a long fin runs from the top of its head to the tip of its tail. It has thin straight horns and eastern-looking beards and whiskers.
Astral Dragon
First Sighting: February 2006
Native Color: Amethyst scales, with Gold horns and Cloud wings and spines
Breath: Planets and Stars, in a stream of night-sky
Aura: A galaxy of stars (Dragon only)
The astral dragon is a mystical creature, tracing its origins to creatures beyond the stars. Its curiously curved horns and wings give it a truly majestic image, while its tattered spines and fins suggest an age far beyond mortals.
Bast Dragon
First Sighting: August 2006
Native Color: Black body, blue/white feathered wings and gold claws
Breath: Sand
The Bast dragon is feline in appearance, with a sleek black body and striking blue-and-white feathered wings. Its fluid movements and intelligent eyes mark it as both noble and deadly.
- The Bast comes with a saddle that seats two riders and which has flight and ground modes
Dracolich Dragon
First Sighting: October 2006
Native Color: Bone
Breath: A blast of pure death and decay
The Dracolich is an abomination among dragons: a reanimated skeleton of a long dead dragon. The flesh on its bones and wings has withered away, leaving a menacing skeletal form.
Fae Dragon
First Sighting: May 2006
Native Color: Purple
Breath: A colourful stream of flowers and leaves
The Fae dragon is a mystical creature, with a slender dragon body and feminine features. The fae dragon is adorned with vines and leaves and has butterfly wings.
Fire Dragon
First Sighting: Summer 2005
Native Color: Fire scales and spines with Red wings and Gold claws
Breath: A searing jet of Flames
The fire dragon is the creature of Legend, capable of ravaging countrysides and leaving them in smoldering ruins. Its wings are large and bat-like; its head and neck are adorned with a mane of spines. The fire dragon embodies the characteristics of a common western dragon. This dragon has the option of two styles of head: old style and new style.
Hydra Dragon
First Sighting: Fall 2005
Native Color: Red scales and wings with Black spines and Bronze claws
Breath: A searing jet of Flames from each head
The Hydra dragon is a fearsome creature to behold. Its three unique heads can each breathe flames, as well as hold their own conversations. This multi-headed beast comes with two styles of bodies: one with two tails instead of just one.
Ice Dragon
First Sighting: Summer 2005
Native Color: Mercury scales and spines with Silver horns and claws
Breath: A blast of ice with snowflakes
The Ice Dragon is a creature of cold climates, encrusted with crystals and icicles. Its wings shimmer with frosty skin and its front plates reflect like gems: truly a sight to behold. The Ice dragon has two sets of wings and two styles of body (flight and non-flight).
Royal Dragon
First Sighting: Spring 2005
Native Color: Royal scales with Gold wings and spines
Breath: An electrifying bolt of lightning
The Royal dragon is extravagantly adorned with long curved spines and spiralled horns. Its beards and whiskers give it a regal look of wisdom and insight, while its stylized wings and spines add a flare of nobility.
Shadow Dragon
First Sighting: December 2005
Native Color: Black scales with Red wings and spines and Ancient horns and claws
Breath: A thick blast of blood and darkness
This dragon lurks in the shadows, stalking prey until it sees the perfect opportunity to strike. Its three sets of menacing horns give it a truly fearsome look, while its long snout and jaws are perfect for tearing flesh from bones.
Spirit Dragon
First Sighting: April 2006
Native Color: White scales, full bright and partially transparent
Breath: A stream of light and stars
Aura: A white puffy cloud
The spirit dragon is a eastern-dragon design, with a serpent-like wingless body, and canine features in the face, and long whiskers.
Steam Dragon
First Sighting:
Native Color:
Breath: A boiling jet of steam/A jet of fire
Aura: A cloud of smoke and steam
The Steam dragon whirrs and hisses majestically, its powerful mechanical wings beating the air around it. Great pistons drive its legs and the head swivels on toothy cogs. Is this a new kind of evolution, or a mad scientists dream made real?
Storm Dragon
First Sighting: February 2006
Native Color: Silver scales and wings with Gold horns and claws
Breath: Breathes bolts of lightning from its mouth
Aura: A storm cloud and rain
The Storm Dragon can breathe deadly bolts of lightning and summon storm clouds. It has a slender, shiny body with large powerful wings.
Tiamat
First Sighting: July 2006
Native Color: Multi-colored heads with multi-colored scales on the body
Breath: Five different breaths, one from each head: fire, water, ice, lighting, and astral
Tiamat is a mysterious dragon, some say a living god among dragon kings, but so little is seen of this splendid dragon that it is hard to say. Only members of the Council of Wyrms can even reach his secluded chambers.
The Wyverns
When Daryth returned to the Isles at last she brought with her tales of strange new creatures that were reptilian in nature and winged like the dragons but yet different too: these new creatures walked on two legs instead of four and possessed an almost feline intelligence and sense of grace. Found in myth and legend they are called Wyverns and are reckoned by many to be some distant cousin of the noble dragon.
Daryth thumbed through her newest journal shaking sands and dried mud from the leaves as drawings and passages of text flashed by under her fingers and thumbs. She paused for a moment and then spun the little book around:
Arctic Wyvern
First Sighting: March 2007
Native Color: Ice blue scales with silvery crystaline protective ridges and azure claws
Breath: None
Aura: A jet of poison emitted from the tail
Some jumbled notes surround a quick sketch which is scored through and annotated with a page number, indicating there are better notes elsewhere in her journal.
- The Arctic Wyvern comes with saddles that seats up to two riders and which has flight and ground modes
Desert Wyvern
First Sighting: March 2007
Native Color: Brown scales with sandy protective ridges and Bone-white claws
Breath: None
Aura: A fireball
Shades of sandy brown camouflage the young and adults alike and their speed and feline cunning make the Desert Wyverns formidable hunters.
- The Desert Wyvern comes with saddles that seats up to two riders and which has flight and ground modes
