The Draconians!
The Draconians! by Ryu Darragh
Long ago, in the misty dawn of time, Dragons ruled the world from the Isle of Wyrms. They visited many worlds and were seen as beings of enormous power and great wisdom.
As, indeed, they were. But, their power and great physical stature came at a price. They had great difficulty manipulating small detailed objects.
And amongst those myriad small objects were the great treasures of art and repositories of knowledge they had accumulated over the millennia.
A solution was sought. Workers of many species were tried. The most promising were strange bipedal creatures, nearly furless and lacking proper scales, they were, nevertheless, nearly ideal.
At first these creatures performed their tasks with enthusiasm and great skill, but problems soon developed. They had interests of their own and soon fell into political intrigues and infighting amongst themselves.
What sealed their fate were their attempts to get the Dragons themselves involved in their usually petty bickering. They were sent away, banished to the outer worlds with great sadness. Many were kindred spirits to the Dragons, but elected to remain with their families.
The strange bipeds, who called themselves "human", would one day tell tales of the great Dragons. And there would be much exaggeration and embellishment in those tales.
Their presence had one benefit in finding a solution. The Elder Dragons could shape themselves in many ways, as indeed they had to bring about the myriad forms and species that exist today.
They tried an experiment. A bold and interesting one. A number of the Elders shaped themselves into nearly human shaped forms. These forms, with hands as fine as any humans, allowed them to do all the things they needed to do.
Alas, it was a useful, but impractical idea. There were not enough to form a useful workforce and it was very difficult to achieve in those early years.
It was then decided that a number of the Elders would remain in that form and have offspring while wearing that form. Their children would retain the shape of their parents.
And so it was done. Thus were born THE DRACONIANS!
The Dragons are gods to the draconians, though perhaps that term is too easily misunderstood. That does not mean that Dragons are deities, but rather something more akin to parents in a way.
It is here that the draconians dwell and toil away to create the homes and dwellings for themselves and their lords. The role of a draconian from birth is to serve and to see that the needs of their elder kin are met.
Draconians are all tribal in nature, each separating themselves by species in much the way that the Ancient American Indians divided themselves into different children of nature to share in the care taking of their world.
In this similar way the draconians live in their families and tribes each having their own traditions and preferences.
So this is why the Cathedral exists here in the Isles. They are the builders of these ancient temples. Their cultures borrowed from those that were brought back by the Elder Dragons in their travels among the stars and other worlds.
Their arts are diverse and reflect their elder's tales of the worlds beyond the rim. The elder kin, able to take other forms, often dwell among the draconians who have made this home for them.
Draconians are not seen as lesser or even as servants by the Elder Dragons, only by the draconians themselves who have decided to dedicate themselves in this way. Rather, they are seen as companions and friends of their kind.
For through their veins and in their hearts runs the same blood and passions as flows through the veins and hearts of the Elder Dragons.
Kindred spirits, a rare thing for a Dragon to call a people their friends after being hunted down and killed in the human worlds.
Only the elves and the other demi-human and semi-human races (some call them Furries and Scalies and more) appear to share in this kinship.
Though some humans, enlightened by their Dragon friends, have also joined them here in the Isles, this place of wings and blue skies.
Some humans, believed to be Dragon spirits incarnated briefly in human form, come to the Isles and find assistance on their journey here so that they may take their true shapes and join their brothers and sisters in the skies and amongst the clouds.
